主旨:The 11th Japan-Taiwan Joint Workshop for Young Scholars in Applied Mathematics

內容:

The Taiwan-Japan Joint Workshop for Young Scholars in Applied Mathematics has been held 10 times by Taiwan and Japan in the past. Due to its excellent results, the number of participating young lecturers (master and doctoral students and post-doctoral students) has grown from about 20 to 40-50 today . The previous session was held at Ryukoku University in Japan. The new 11th session is expected to be held in 2020 in the Department of Applied Mathematics at Tunghai University. It will be co-organized by Taiwan and Japanese PDE, biomathematics, modeling and other applied mathematics.

This series of conferences features topics ranging from theoretical ODEs and PDEs, to computational methods, to biological, physics, and chemical-related models, to financial phenomena, image processing, and industrial design. The previous sessions really opened the eyes of the participants and received great academic shock. The participating Taiwanese and Japanese lecturers (Master and Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows) were extremely excited during the rich interaction. The meeting provided an excellent platform for them to enhance their friendship. Establish academic networks and networks with potential students and scholars early.

主旨:Workshop on analysis and its applications in biology and physiology

內容:

Conventionally, analysis plays a crucial role to justify PDE (partial differential equation) models which come from various fields of biology and physiology. However, due to the complexity of recent achievements in biological networks, protein structures and complex fluids, traditional PDE models are not sufficient to fit the need and new mathematical models have to be developed. Analytical techniques of variational and statistical methods may provide tools to derive mathematical models for the studies of structural bioinformatics, drug discovery and data mining. The main goal of the workshop is to discuss the biological models of PDE, the solving methods (analytical and numerical methods) and the relation of mathematical results and biological significance. The workshop will give an opportunity for researchers in related areas to share and discuss their current research ideas.

主旨:2020 NCTS Mini Course: Understanding a Protein Three-dimensional Structure and Letting It Move with Molecular Dynamics

內容:

Nowadays the three dimensional structure of more and more proteins is becoming available at few Angstroms resolution. In the meantime, the growing computational power allows the prediction of atom dynamics for very large systems, such as a protein and the surrounding water. This scenario opens the possibility to apply physical laws in order to deeply understand the relationship existing between the chemical structure of a protein and its biological function. In this tutorial the basics of protein structure will first be reviewed. The chemical and physical properties of the twenty naturally occurring aminoacids will be presented, and how aminoacids assemble to form proteins having complex shapes will be discussed.

We will then describe how to use freely available software to read and visualize a 3D protein structure, and to perform on it simple molecular dynamics simulations, in order to understand its movement at the picosecond timesclales. At the end of the tutorial, the student will be able to look at the details of a protein three-dimensional structure, visualize and understand the relevant properties of the structure, such as the presence and location of electric charges on it, and finally to setup simple molecular dynamics simulations.

主旨:Mini-workshop on Membrane Protein: Its Biology and Mathematical Modeling

內容:

Membrane proteins are common proteins that are part of, or interact with, biological membranes. Membrane proteins fall into several broad categories depending on their location. Integral membrane proteins are a permanent part of a cell membrane and can either penetrate the membrane (transmembrane) or associate with one or the other side of a membrane (integral monotopic). Peripheral membrane proteins are transiently associated with the cell membrane. Membrane proteins are common, and medically important—about a third of all human proteins are membrane proteins, and these are targets for more than half of all drugs. Here, in this workshop, the membrane proteins that we are interested in are mainly ion channels, receptors and transporters. We have gathered speakers with backgrounds from experimental biology, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, and mathematical modeling based on partial differential equations (PDE). We hope this workshop can promote some inter-disciplinary collaborations among there kinds of experts mentioned above and at the same time motivate young mathematical scholars and students into the study of this interesting mathematical biology field.

主旨:2020 NCTS Winter Minicourse at NCKU-Introduction to Curve Shortening Flow內容:

Geometric flow is an active field in geometric analysis. It has played a prominent role in several recent breakthrough in geometry, topology and mathematical physics: Perelman used Ricci flow to prove the Poincare conjecture in 2003 (based on Hamilton's work from 1982 to 1997); Huisken-Ilmanen used inverse mean curvature flow to prove the Riemannian Penrose inequality in general relativity. Geometric flow also appears ubiquitously in applications. Applied mathematicians use mean curvature flow to smooth out rough data and study surface tension in fluids and materials.

This minicourse introduces students the basic ideas geometric flow through curve shortening flow. We will follow professor R. Haslhofer's lecture notes and learn Huisken's proof of the classical theorem of Gage-Hamilton and Grayson using maximum principle, Harnack inequality and blowup analysis.

數學建模黑客松係透過黑客松的競賽精神,讓參賽者在短時間內,透過密集思考與設計的過程,創造出能夠解決生活周遭問題的數學模型,也就是透過數學來描述遭遇到的某種現象。

內容:Traditionally "Experimental Design" is used to make the proper plan to collect the data for the future analysis and this target is different from the idea of the Data Science. 主旨:2019 Winter Workshop on Optimization

內容:Like many applied areas in mathematics, optimization plays an important role in almost every aspect of industry and data sciences, but has its root in abstract theory of mathematics. We have a group of researchers in Taiwan working on optimization, ranging from non-convex quadratic programming; polynomial optimization; supply chain and inventory control; l_0 norm optimization for reconstructing sparse signal solutions in compressive sensing, and many others. We feel that it would be exciting if we can get more people who are interested in our recent work and developments, and who want to share different perspectives and a break-through technique or two they know while applying optimization to different areas, we can all benefit from each other for a great mixture like that. When we broadcast the idea internationally for holding a workshop in Taiwan, the reactions were more positive than we had expected so that the workshop becomes a two-days format rather than just one-day in our original plan. We are going to have participants/speakers from Vietnam, South Korea and Japan who want to know what we are doing here for optimization in Taiwan. We expect the two-days winter workshop on optimization will be able to foster discussions within the community of Optimization, especially we are aimed to promote more research activities in Taiwan.

內容:The purpose of this workshop is to provide an environment for scholars to update the recent development in the related research fields and exchange research ideas. This is the 4th time that we organize this conference. The first two times took place in South Korea. The third time took place in Japan. This time, we decide to do it in Taipei. 主旨:2019 NCTS Workshop on Scientific Computing and Machine Learning

內容:We are in an era that experiences the explosion of data. The amount of data and available computing power has resulted in many exciting advancements of machine learning algorithms and applications. However, there are still many essential questions left unanswered. How do we harvest a large amount of available data to extract knowledge and insights? Particularly the cases in which one can generate the data by scientific computing algorithms that can simulate to great accuracy some systems that abide by known physical laws? How can mathematical theory and scientific computing insights help explain or design new ways to uncover information from data?

In this workshop, we have speakers from the fields of applied mathematics, scientific computing, and machine learning, presenting their latest research. The objective is two-fold: discover how state-of-the-art machine learning framework and algorithms can enable the advancement of scientific computing, and how scientific computing techniques can improve and generalize machine learning models and computation.

主旨:Workshop on analysis and its applications in biology and physiology

內容:Conventionally, analysis plays a crucial role to justify PDE (partial differential equation) models which come from various fields of biology and physiology. However, due to the complexity of recent achievements in biological networks, protein structures and complex fluids, traditional PDE models are not sufficient to fit the need and new mathematical models have to be developed. Analytical techniques of variational and statistical methods may provide tools to derive mathematical models for the studies of structural bioinformatics, drug discovery and data mining. The main goal of the workshop is to discuss the biological models of PDE, the solving methods (analytical and numerical methods) and the relation of mathematical results and biological significance. The workshop will give an opportunity for researchers in related areas to share and discuss their current research ideas.

主旨:2020數感盃青少年數學寫作競賽

內容:臺灣學生儘管成績優越,多數人卻對數學興趣低落,認為數學不實用。而這樣低落的情意面向,直接地影響學生投入進階數學研究的意願,也使得多數學生不懂主動應用數學到各專業領域以及生活的思考。數感盃提供全國國中生、高中職生在培養數學素養後,將數學與文學結合的創作舞台,鼓勵學生跨領域學習,運用數學知識,培養及展現邏輯思考與文字撰寫的能力,盼提升臺灣青少年科普寫作的風氣以及對數學的興趣。
